We, the
undersigned, do hereby exercise our Constitutional Right and appeal to
the United States Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice to
exercise their authority and investigate possible civil rights
violations concerning the assassination of Dekalb County Sheriff-Elect
Derwin Brown.
Sheriff-Elect Derwin Brown was an integral part of
an ongoing investigation into the corruption in the Dekalb County
Sheriff’s Department. His involvement in this investigation existed
during his service as Captain and Assistant Precinct Commander in the
Dekalb County Police Department as well as after his forced
resignation at the hands of his superior following his
overwhelming victory in his campaign for the Sheriff’s Office.
It is our belief that Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown was
murdered in order to prevent incriminating evidence regarding corruption
and illegal activities from being revealed. Furthermore, it is
highly probable that the scope of this evidence and those who might be
implicated by it, goes beyond the sheriff's department. We
therefore request that the U.S. Department of Justice launch a
full investigation into corruption in DeKalb County, so that the root of
the corruption can be exposed and eliminated.
There is a segment of the law enforcement community and county
government that is truly committed to finding the killers of
Sheriff-Elect Derwin Brown and those who may have conspired to have him
assassinated. There may also exist a segment of the law enforcement
community and county government whose interests will be better served if
the truth is never discovered.
Because of this reason, and the long history of proven corruption in the
Sheriff’s Department, as well as the extremely suspicious
circumstances surrounding this case, it is our contention that
neither the Dekalb County District Attorney’s Office, Dekalb County
Police Department or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is in the
position to objectively pursue the truth in this case.
