| Looks
like the Dekalb sheriff’s office has made the headlines again. Dekalb
sheriff’s department has been under tremendous scrutiny for many
decades as a result of a series of controversies.
Did you know......................Sidney Dorsey fought off
charges that he used deputy labor for his own benefit and assigned
inmate labor to work on houses of supporters of his wife (an Atlanta
City Councilwoman). He was elected in November of 1996, despite
publicity about his arrests for domestic abuse and that he once was
charged with manslaughter.
Did you know.......................Bob Morris was elected in a
special election for sheriff in March, 1996, to fill the unexpired term
of Sheriff Pat Jarvis (a former Atlanta Braves pitcher). While serving
as county commissioner, Morris once tried to pull over a police officer
who was taking home witnesses in a patrol car. Morris accused the
officer of running a taxi service.
Did you know......................Pat Jarvis was sentenced to 15
months in prison and fined $40,000 after pleading guilty to mail fraud,
stemming from kickback schemes through bogus consulting fees from food
vendors, bonding companies and maintenance firms with contracts at the
county jail.
Did you know.......................Ray Bonner, 1973-1976, was
charged with fatally shooting a teenager outside his home a year after
he lost his re-election bid to Jarvis. He was found innocent of the
murder of the 16-year old high school student in a
1977 trial in which he said he was protecting his family from a
prowler. While still in office, Bonner was indicted by a federal grand
jury for allegedly misrepresenting a fund-raising company. The U.S.
Attorneys office dropped the charges due to insufficient evidence.
Did you know.......................Lamar Martin, 1965-1972 was
convicted of four charges of bribery and fined about $13,000 in Dekalb
Superior Court as his term neared re-election against Bonner. He was
also convicted of taking checks from a Decatur bondsman, who said the
sheriff demanded 5% of every bond he wrote.
Did you know.......................that a Coffee County sheriff
was about to be apprehended by state and federal agents for drug
smuggling charges and he apparently killed himself before he was
apprehended.
I know that you know ........On August 8th a man of
integrity, professionalism and accountability was chosen by the people
to be our Sheriff of Dekalb County. The people’s choice was stolen,
snatched away in cold blood. Not because of his race, but because of his
commitment to truth and justice. It is, quite frankly, an assault on
democracy and the electoral process because it’s one more potential
deterrent to good people becoming involved in that process.
Considering the long history of corruption in the Dekalb County
Sheriff’s Department, do you, without reservation, trust the
objectivity of Dekalb County Officials to pursue the TRUTH in the
investigation of the assassination of Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown?
